Introduction |
Introducing new CPA staff CPA Annual Conference 2007 |
Document Review
|
CPA is committed to reviewing all its documentation annually. Some documents change, some are reviewed and no changes are necessary. The disc attached contains those documents that have been changed during the revision process. Please also note that all CPA documents can be downloaded from the website, www.cpa-uk.co.uk There are two documents that have been revised and have changes to note:
There are also two new forms relating to surveillance visits:
The standards have remained the same for now but there will be a revision during 2007. Some of the changes to be made are already known to us but we have agreed to wait until all the issues have been settled before issuing a new version. |
The known changes are as follows:
The unknown, but most important issue is the proposal to revise CPA Standard B1. At present, the CPA shareholders are in receipt of a discussion paper about the proposed changes to the wording of this standard to bring it in line with the international standard and also to incorporate the changes brought about by Agenda for Change within the NHS. If agreed, it would be important for all medical laboratories to be aware of its content. Once we have an answer from our shareholders we will be in a position to issue an updated version of the standards that will take CPA through to the next international revision planned for 2008. If we are fortunate to have the changes agreed by the end of March we will be able to discuss them at the CPA Annual Conference. Once again our thanks and appreciation goes to the Standards, Training and Education Group for their hard work in completing this years document review. |

MICHAELA COLLIS
I am joining CPA (UK) Ltd as a Regional Assessor in January 2007. For the last 13 years I have worked in Quality Management within the Electronics Division of Rockwood Specialities Inc, a supplier to the global Semiconductor Industry. After studying A Levels at college, I took a year out before going to University and started a temporary job with Micro Image Technology in 1994 as an SPC Coordinator. This involved statistical analysis within the Laboratories and Manufacturing processes, in order to reduce variation and enable continual improvement. In 1996 I was promoted to Quality Coordinator for the Inorganic Chemicals & Silicon Reclamation Division. I soon realized that I had found my vocation and decided to stay on at MIT whilst studying part time at Nottingham Trent University. I first of all gained a Postgraduate Certificate in Quality and subsequently a Diploma in 1997. Followed by a Master of Science Degree in Quality and Continual Improvement in 2001. Whilst predominantly based at the Manufacturing facility in the East Midlands, I also travelled to other Facilities within Europe and assisted with System development. In 1997 I was promoted to Quality Manager for the Laporte Plc Silicon Reclamation business. In 1999 I led the site to 3rd party accreditation to QS-9000 - the first Silicon Reclaimer to achieve this globally. In subsequent years I led the site through 3rd party certifications to ISO9001:2000; TS16949:2002; ISO 14001:1996; OHSAS 18001. I developed and operated a fully integrated Management System; this was recognized by promotion to Quality & Environment Manger in 2000. When I am not working I enjoy swimming, gardening, reading and cooking. If Im not swimming or tending to my garden, I normally can be found spending time with my husband and family trying out some new recipe in the kitchen or enjoying a glass of wine whilst reading a book. I bring with me a significant amount of experience within Quality/SHE Management Systems and appreciate the amount of effort required by CPAs clients for 3rd party accreditation. I am looking forward to meeting and working with all of you in the Midlands region over the forthcoming months.

LOUISE DAVIDSON
In 1996 I joined IDEXX (veterinary diagnostic) Laboratories in Wetherby to manage the Biochemistry Laboratory. In 2002 the company decided to implement and seek accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. I project managed the implementation of the quality system, later being promoted to Quality Manager, and we gained accreditation by UKAS in 2004. During this time I completed another MSc, in Total Quality Management and Organisational Excellence, and was runner up in the IQA National Award for my research on Six Sigma and quality culture. I have since assisted with the course as an Associate Lecturer. Outside work I am a wife and Mum (to Emma, age 8). I am a bit of an exercise fanatic and fit this in by cycling/running to and from work, and swimming in my lunch hours. I completed my first sprint triathlon this year, and run in the odd 10K race to keep up the momentum. I also enjoy pottering in the garden and reading but also admit to collapsing in front of the TV and being addicted to ebay! I am really looking forward to the new challenge of becoming an assessor for the CPA, and hope to play a role in the development of quality systems and the accreditation process. I also look forward to meeting and working with familiar and new faces in the northern region.

ALISON SPRINGALL
My working life to date has been in the NHS where I have worked in Pathology Laboratories for over 30 years specialising in Cytology. I joined the Whittington Hospital in 1971 as a Student Technician and rotated around all departments where I studied to gain an ONC in Medical Laboratory Science, IBMS Final in Histopathology and passed the IBMS Special examination in Histopathology by 1977. I am currently working as Cytology Laboratory Manager at Watford General Hospital. During my career I have gained invaluable experience in all aspects of laboratory work and in people and financial management and I have provided leadership to large teams of staff. During the past 8 years I have been a peer assessor for CPA and have been involved in a great number of visits to laboratories, assessing against both the old and new standards. On a number of these visits I fulfilled the role of team leader, which required me to critically evaluate the Quality Management System within Pathology laboratories. In this role I have worked with groups of people that have not worked together before and have been successful in producing good results by working as a team and providing a supportive network. A year or so ago I became the proud owner of a greenhouse and have enjoyed producing home grown organic vegetables. I also take great enjoyment from both organising and going on holidays and have this year travelled to the Canary Islands, India and America where I saw the Grand Canyon from the South Rim, which is one of the many places to see before you die. I believe that all of this experience has equipped me with some of the skills that I will need to take on the role of Regional Assessor.

KATHERINE NORTH
After leaving college I completed a combined Biology, Geology and Geography degree at the University of Sheffield, graduating in 1997. I then joined Clifton Park Museum in Rotherham as a voluntary worker in the Natural History section. In 1998 I joined the UK NEQAS for Immunology and Immunochemistry as a Medical Laboratory Assistant and then worked my way up to a Medical External Quality Assessment Technician. After completing a postgraduate certificate in Management, I became interested in quality management, and in December 2004 I became the Quality Manager for the Centre. I also took on the role of Quality Manager for PRU Procurement where I CE marked their products. I wanted to join CPA as I greatly admire the organisation and what it does to raise the standards of medical laboratories and external quality assessment schemes alike. In my spare time I enjoy good dining and good wine with friends. I work this off by going for long walks with my partner and dog in Sherwood Forest and Rother Valley Country Park. I am looking forward to this new challenge and look forward to working with you all.

CPA ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2007
|
Newcastle Tuesday 27 March 2007 London Thursday 29 March 2007 Birmingham Friday 30 March 2007
Registration Fee: £90
Traditionally, the CPA Annual Conference has been a one-day event, held centrally in London in March.
The Conference is always fully subscribed and 2006 was no exception. Participant feedback is encouraged and there were three suggestions for change made very clearly this year. To facilitate these changes the Conference in 2007 will have a new format.
In response to requests for easier access there will be a one-day event held in three separate locations to cover the CPA regions nationally. This will also allow a larger audience to attend.
The format of the meeting will also include a Question and Answer session allowing attendees to gain more information about the accreditation standards and CPA as the organisation continues to evolve.
The morning session will provide information about CPA and its activities and the new processes being introduced and a view to the future of accreditation in the UK.
There will be a Q&A session in the afternoon and we are requesting you provide us with questions in advance on the booking form.
The day is open to all involved in the provision of a medical laboratory service, EQA providers and also the service users. The delegate fee has been kept to a minimum to encourage attendance from as many grades of staff as possible.
Please come along and participate in the day, not only to be kept informed but also to have your own views heard.
We look forward to welcoming you in March. |
