The role of Advanced Practitioners in Cytology for CPA assessments

Two issues have been discussed in relation to the role of the Advanced Practitioner in Cytology:
  1. Should the individual be assessing Histopathology as well as Cytopathology?
  2. Is their role in CPA assessment scientific or medical?

It has been agreed that the use of Advanced Practitioners in assessing Histopathology should be judged on a case-by-case basis, as previous training and current duties vary between NHS Trusts.

It is noted that the Advanced Practitioners are currently authorised to report gynaecological smears, but not as yet, non-gynaecological cytology. It is agreed that at present their role for assessment purposes should not be that of a consultant Histopathologist. It is agreed that this will be reviewed at a future date.

At present CPA include the following assessors on a visit to a Histopathology/Cytology department:

    · One consultant Histopathologist
    · One consultant Cytopathologist
    · One Histopathology/Cytology BMS
